Students involved in the Student Senate gain experience in Murray State’s legislative process.  Three senators from each academic college and the School of Agriculture, two senators from each Residential College and eight senators-at-large are elected each April through a campus-wide election.  Aside from passing legislation at its weekly meetings, the Student Senate provides the campus planner, voter registration and a campus voice (student regent) to the board of regents.

Freshmen senators are a part of the Student Senate.  Election for freshmen senators are held at the beginning of the fall semester, when two senators are elected by a campus-wide vote of the freshmen class.  To qualify for freshmen senators, you must be in your first or second semester at Murray State.

Within the Student Senate there are four paid positions, which are appointed by the senate.  They are Publications and Public Relations, Election Ways and Means, University Affairs and Student Services Evaluation.

CAB

The Campus Activities Board is composed of 15 chairpersons who plan and promote activities for students and the community.  The chairpersons are students appointed by SGA each spring.

Activities provided by the CAB include concerts, lectures, comedy and musical acts, the Miss MSU Pageant, Homecoming parade and events, Family Weekend, spontaneous events in the Curris Center, multicultural events, spring week plus much more. CAB also includes a membership committee for students interested in being involved with activities, but not as a chairperson. They are asked to help plan and promote events to gain experience with the CAB. The membership committee is selected in the fall by filling out a CABbie application in the Center for Student Involvement.

The Judicial Board is the judicial body of SGA.  To be one of the ten members, applicants must have at least junior status and not be an officer or member of any other branch of SGA.  The chairperson of the Judicial Board is a paid position.  These positions are appointed in April of each year.

The Residential College Association represents the interests of all members of the residential college system, including all Murray State students as well as faculty and staff of the university. While RCA is charged with representing all residential college members, it primarily focuses on representing those students who live within the residential colleges.  Each residential college will elect at least one RCA representative, who will join the residential college president and the two elected senators at each RCA meeting.  This group of four residential college members will work collectively to represent the needs of the residents in all matters brought before RCA.

A “CABbie” is a volunteer who is willing to assist the Campus Activities Board with promoting and executing the planned events which are sponsored. Responsibilities of a Cabbie might include prepare and/or usher for concerts and lectures, supervising event programs, and assisting with Homecoming and the Miss MSU Pageant (our two biggest events), as well as helping out with various other CAB-sponsored events. Cabbies are only asked to work those activities that fit into their schedules. This position is a great learning opportunity for anyone interested in serving as a Chair on CAB.

One duty of the freshmen senators is to chair the standing senate committee: Freshmen Council.  The council consists of fifteen freshmen that are selected through an application and interview process.  The purpose of the council is to discuss issues, promote services provided by Murray State and plan activities for the freshmen student body.
